In '25 Shotokan Kata', Sugiyama has brought the complex movements of Shotokan kata to their simplest form for learning. This book is either an outstanding tome or a mediocre one, depending on what you're looking for. It's a thorough step-by-step description of the various Shotokan kata, an invaluable resource for karateka who are looking to remember the sequences of these various forms. It falls seriously short, however, if you're looking for insight into bunkai (applications) for the kata. In other words, you see all the motions but do not get any description of practical street-worthy applications from them (there's only so much you can pack into one book anyway; it's already 300 pages). Soooo, as long as your expectations are clear and you just want documentation of the steps, it's well worth owning.Contents include Heian (shodan, nidan, sandan, yodan, and godan), Tekki (shodan, nidan, sandan), Bassai (Dai and sho), Jion, Empi, Kanku (Dai and sho), Hangetsu, Jitte, Gankaku,Nijy shi ho, Chintei, Sochin, Meikyo, Unsu, Wankan, and Gojyu Shiho (sho and dai). The materials are logically organized in the order in which they are taught at the majority of schools.

The illustrations are nothing special, basic yet serviceable. The instructions are also rather simplistic too, but when integrated with the illustrations the combination is sufficiently clear for most any practitioner to follow.Great breadth of materials but not so much depth. Regardless, a great resource for Shotokan practitioners and karateka interested in that style.Lawrence KaneAuthor of Blinded by the Night, among other titles.

Truly, truly the greatest kata book ever!!! There are a lot of helpful bunkai illustrations also. Yes, its usually expensive and no, you won't find it for very cheap, ever. But, I have lots of kata books. Actually, a friggin library of kata books and this is so user friendly. The hidden hand is illustrated with dash lines so as to give the whole truth. So many people have their own interpretation of katas and this helps set the record straight with precision, conciseness, and direction.

Many teachers will try to hold you back by determining your pace and this allows you to go at your own pace and blaze forward. Turn your learning curve to full blast. If theres a better kata book out there, tell me, but I haven't found it yet. '25 - Shotokan Kata'This s a very well put together volume. It utilizes isometric visualization to make the movements of the Kata more understandable.

A couple of pluses that I like are the Japanese and Spanish language translations that come with it also. I have Spanish speaking students and when it comes to explaining some things, this is a real help for me. It takes some adapting to get used to the symbology for speed and transitional movements, but this book is very good for assisting the student in their journey to mastering the Kata for Shotokan. It is also a great help for Sensei in the dojo.Scott Doerr - Sensei - Shisei Ryu Aiki Budo KaiSeishin Budokan. After a long hiatus, I've returned to the martial arts and have been learning several new katas. This book has been a great aid.

The diagrams are easy enough to understand and there are also explanations that match each step of the kata. This book is far superior to DVD's or YouTube as it is easier to keep track of where you are at with the book. I use video instruction as a supplement to the book to cover complex transitions between moves and to see the rhythm of the kata.

But to learn the basics of the form, the terms associated with the movements, and some applications, this book is great.
